Gryphon volleyball men hang tough in five-set ousting

KINGSTON – The Guelph Gryphons decided that they just weren’t going to be swept out of the OUA men’s volleyball playoffs.

After dropping the first two sets of their quarter-final match with the Queen’s Gaels at the Queen’s Athletic Recreation Centre Saturday, the Gryphs ran off a pair of set wins and took the tie-breaker set beyond its regulation time before bowing out.

The host Gaels had won the first two sets by 25-18 and 25-14 scores before the Gryphs came alive, winning the next two sets 25-22 and 25-21.

The winner of the fifth set usually scores 15 points, but it went farther than that as Queen’s needed eight more points to capture the match with a 23-21 win.

The Gryphs got 12 players into the match, four more than the Gaels who had a .273 kill percentage with 58 kills and 23 errors. The Gryphs were at .151 with 51 kills and 30 errors.

Oliver Hissink connected for 17 kills, two assists, an ace, six digs and a block for the Gryphs while Zarko Ubiparip had 14 kills, 12 digs and two blocks and Zach Newman had nine kills, an ace, two digs and a block.

Zac Hutcheson had 24 kills, two assists, an ace, 10 digs and three blocks for Queen’s while Adam Boljkovac had 11 kills, two aces, 12 digs and a block and Malcolm Prentice had nine kills, a dig and three blocks.

The Gryphs had finished fourth in the West Division at 8-9 and had lost their final five regular-season matches. The Gaels had finished first in the East Division at 15-3 and entered the playoffs on an eight-match winning streak.

Queen’s will host the Forsyth Cup OUA Final Four next weekend and will play the Toronto Varsity Blues in Friday’s semifinals while the Windsor Lancers and McMaster Marauders will tangle in the other semifinal. Winners advance to Saturday’s championship match.
