Gryphon volleyball men keep eyes on playoff berth

GUELPH – No surprises as the Guelph Gryphons kept their playoff hopes alive in the OUA men’s volleyball league’s West Division by dropping the Trent Excalibur 3-0 at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre Saturday night.

The win left the Gryphs in fourth in the six-team division at 7-8. Realistically, they’re in a battle with the Waterloo Warriors (6-7) for the final playoff berth in the division. McMaster Marauders (13-1) lead and the Western Mustangs (11-2) are second and both have clinched playoff berths. Windsor Lancers (9-5) are third and on the cusp of securing a spot in the playoffs and Brock Badgers (5-10) are sixth and on the brink of elimination.

The Gryphs swept the Excalibur in 70 minutes, winning 25-10, 25-16, 25-13, using their bench for most of the match.

Matt Baxter had 12 kills, two aces, two digs and a block while Josh Green had nine kills, an ace, six digs, two blocks and an assist and Oliver Hissink had four kills. David Duhan had three kills, two aces, four digs, a block and an assist and Daiken Edwards had an ace, six digs and 23 assists.

The Gryphs have two games to go in their regular season, both road matches. They get the bye next weekend and are to play at Western Feb. 23 and at Windsor Feb. 25.

Waterloo has four to play as they’re to host Trent Sunday and play at Brock Feb. 18, at Windsor Feb. 21 and at Western Feb. 24.
