Gryphon volleyball men knock off East leaders

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons scored their second consecutive win in OUA men’s volleyball play as they handed the East Division-leading Queen’s Gaels a 3-1 setback Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

After dropping the first set 26-24, the Gryphs rallied with 25-22, 25-19 and 25-22 wins.

The Gryphs recorded a .225 kill percentage with 44 kills while Queen’s had a .162 kill percentage with 49 kills. The Gryphs also had 12 blocks to four by the Gaels.

Zarko Ubiparip had 12 kills, two aces, two digs and two blocks while Jakson Paterson had nine kills, two aces, two digs and four blocks.

Zac Hutcheson collected 12 kills, two assists, an ace, six digs and a block for Queen’s and Malcolm Prentice had 12 kills and an ace.

The Gryphs move to 5-4 with the win and are fourth in the West Division while Queen’s drops to 7-4.

The Gryphs are to host the RMC Paladins (1-9) Saturday at 8 p.m. at the GGAC.
