Gryphon volleyball men lock down spot in playoffs

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons posted a pair of dominant set victories to claim a 3-2 win over the Brock Badgers in OUA men’s volleyball play Saturday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.

The victory clinched a playoff berth for the Gryphs.

Zarko Ubiparip had 19 kills for the Gryphs while Gideon Dresser had 40 assists, Jakson Paterson and Ubiparip each had two aces, Ben Kissack had 11 digs and Paterson had six blocks.

Logan House had 24 kills for Brock while Marcelo Muniz Correa had 33 assists, House had two aces, Ethan Kalef had 11 digs and House had three blocks.

The Gryphs had a .336 kill percentage with 58 kills, 51 assists, six aces, 43 digs and 13 blocks while Brock had a .271 kill percentage with 64 kills, 57 assists, three aces, 44 digs and 10 blocks.

McMaster Marauders lead the West Division at 14-1 while the Gryphs are second at 9-5. Windsor Lancers (8-6) are third and are followed by the Western Mustangs (6-8), Brock (6-9) and Waterloo Warriors (3-10). Top four make the playoffs.

The three races left on Guelph’s schedule are all away from the GGAC. The Gryphs are to be in Kingston next weekend to face the RMC Paladins (1-14) Friday and Queen’s Gaels (11-4) Saturday and they’re to finish their regular season Feb. 22 against the Waterloo Warriors at Waterloo.
