Gryphon volleyball men lose, but clinch playoff berth

WINDSOR – Despite a 3-1 loss to the Windsor Lancers Friday night at Windsor’s St. Denis Centre, the Guelph Gryphons clinched a berth in the OUA men’s volleyball playoffs.

The Gryphs secured their playoff berth when the Western Mustangs edged the Waterloo Warriors 3-2 in another league match Friday night.

Waterloo was the lone team that could knock the Gryphs out of fourth place in the West Division, the final spot that gets a berth in the playoffs.

The McMaster Marauders have clinched first in the division as they’re at 14-2 while Windsor and Western are tied for second at 12-4. The Gryphs are fourth at 8-8 and Waterloo’s fifth at 6-10.

Friday, the Lancers won 21-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-16 to keep the Gryphs winless in February.

The Gryphs had a .054 kill percentage with 37 kills and 31 errors while Windsor was at .364 with 48 kills and 12 errors.

Zarko Ubiparip led the Gryphs with 13 kills, two assists and six digs while Zach Newman had eight kills, three aces, three digs and a block and Oliver Hissink had six kills and four digs.

Brad Gyemi had 16 kills, two digs and four blocks for Windsor while Pierce Johnson had 13 kills, two assists, three aces, 12 digs and three blocks.

The Gryphs are to complete their regular season Saturday against Western at Western. The match is to start at 8 p.m.

The Gryphs are to play the Queen’s Gaels, first in the East at 15-3, in quarter-final playoff play next week at Kingston.
