
Gryphon volleyball men nipped by Waterloo
WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons were surprised by the Waterloo Warriors Saturday night in a marathon OUA men’s volleyball match on the Carl Totzke Court in Waterloo’s Physical Activities Centre.
The Warriors defeated the Gryphs 3-2.

Waterloo won the final two sets 25-20 and 15-7 to take the match. The Gryphs had opened with a 28-26 win in the opening set before the Warriors responded with a 25-22 win in the second set. Guelph outlasted Waterloo 38-36 in the third set.
The Gryphs had a .234 kill percentage in the match while Waterloo was at .325.
The hosts took most of the team categories as the Warriors had 77 kills, seven aces, 77 assists and 51 digs to 58 kills, three aces, 58 assists and 37 digs for the Gryphs.
Guelph did have 16 blocks to 12 for Waterloo.
Arjun Selhi had 15 kills, two assists, four blocks, an ace and nine digs for the Gryphs while Jacob Schweyer had 11 kills, five blocks and four digs. Jacob Bailey had nine kills while Joshua Glasbergen had eight kills and 10 blocks, Jack Richards had 43 assists, four blocks, two aces and six digs, Andrew Song had seven assists and Daniel Pickett had four assists and 11 digs.
Liam Macarthur had 28 kills and 10 digs for Waterloo while Logan Wenzel had 72 assists, Fehin Awobodu had eight blocks and Siraj Khanna had three aces.
The loss kept the Gryphs in a win-one, lose-one path that they started with a loss in their final league match of 2022. They have two wins and two losses this month.
The result leaves the Gryphs at 8-5 in league play and Waterloo at 3-9.
Next up for the Gryphs is a pair of matches with the Windsor Lancers (9-4) at Windsor’s Toldo Lancer Centre. They’re to play Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m.
