Gryphon volleyball men slip by Waterloo

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons made it 2-for-2 in their return to OUA men’s volleyball play Saturday as they won the final two sets to edge the Waterloo Warriors 3-2 at Waterloo’s PAC gym.

The Gryphs and Waterloo swapped set wins until the Gryphs won the fifth set 15-8. Waterloo won the opening set 25-20, Guelph won the second set 25-23, Waterloo took the third set 25-18 and the Gryphs won the fourth set 25-21.

Guelph had a .151 kill percentage in the match while Waterloo was at .177.

The Gryphs had 42 kills, six aces, 10 blocks, 37 assists and 31 digs while Waterloo had 45 kills, six aces, six blocks, 40 assists and 30 digs.

Jonathan Pickett had 17 kills, six digs, four blocks and two aces for the Gryphs while Alexander Odle had eight kills, seven digs, two blocks and an ace and Joshua Glasbergen had seven kills, five blocks and two assists. Jack Richards had 16 assists and two aces, Gideon Dresser had 18 assists and Ben Kissack had eight digs.

Liam MacArthur connected for 17 kills, six digs, three aces and two blocks for Waterloo while Bennett Newell had eight digs, four blocks, an ace and an assist. Siraj Khanna had six kills and two blocks and Colm Guyn had 35 assists and four digs, Nolan Spencer had 11 kills and Fehin Awobodu had two aces.

Next up for the Gryphs is a pair of matches against the Western Mustangs next weekend at London. They’re to play Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m.
