Gryphon volleyball men start season with win

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons opened their OUA men’s volleyball campaign with a 3-1 victory over the Waterloo Warriors Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs won the first two sets 25-18 and 25-20 before Waterloo responded with a 25-19 victory in the third set. The hosts put the match away with a 25-23 fourth-set victory.

Zach Newman had 14 kills and four aces for the Gryphs while Matt Baxter had nine kills and eight digs. Oliver Hissink collected 33 assists, Ben Kissack had 12 digs and Sam Nothnagel had three blocks.

Nolan Spencer had nine kills for Waterloo and Bennett Newell had seven. Colm Guyn had 26 assists and Hayden Cavender had four aces, Waylon Chen had eight digs and Andrew Smondulak had two blocks.

The match was the first of four consecutive home matches for the Gryphs. They’re to play the York Lions Friday at 8 p.m., Western Mustangs Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. and Windsor Lancers Nov. 11 at 3 p.m.
