Gryphon volleyball men sweep Waterloo in season opener

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons swept the Waterloo Warriors aside with a 3-0 victory in their OUA men’s volleyball season opener Saturday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs won 25-19, 25-22 and 25-21.

The Gryphs had 40 kills, seven service aces and nine blocks in the match while Waterloo had 26 kills, an ace and seven blocks.

Matthew Baxter had 10 kills and an ace for the Gryphs while Oliver Hissink had eight kills and an ace, Zarko Ubiparip had nine kills, an ace, two blocks and three digs, Jakson Paterson had eight kills and three blocks, Gideon Dresser had four aces, 34 assists and six digs and Ben Kissack had an assist and five digs.

For Waterloo, Nolan Spencer had eight kills, Bennett Newell had an ace, Matthew Mawdsley had three blocks, Colm Guyn had 24 assists and Issac Nesbitt had four digs.

The Gryphs (1-0) are to play the Trent Excalibur Sunday at 3 p.m. at the GGAC. The match will be the first of the regular season for Trent.
