Gryphon volleyball men sweep Waterloo to end regular season

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons finished their OUA men’s volleyball league’s regular season by sweeping the Waterloo Warriors 3-0 Saturday at Waterloo’s Physical Activities Complex.

The Gryphs won 25-23, 25-18, 25-23.

The locals had a .869 kill percentage with 41 kills, eight aces, 34 digs and four blocks while Waterloo had a .153 kill percentage with 28 kills, six aces, 23 digs and eight blocks.

Oliver Hissink had 13 kills and Jonathan Pickett had 11 for the Gryphs while Gideon Dresser had 24 assists and five digs. Jakson Paterson, Hissink and Zarko Ubiparip each had two aces while Ben Kissack had 11 digs and Pickett had eight.

Andrew Smondulak had eight kills while Colm Guyn had 24 assists. Matthew Mawdsley and Nolan Spencer each had two aces while Jonathan Loos had six digs and Kevin Lebreux had three blocks.

The Gryphs finish second in the West Division at 11-6 and are to host the Ryerson Rams, third in the East at 11-7, in the quarter-finals. Game time Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.

Guelph swept Ryerson 3-0 in their regular-season meeting Nov. 8 at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.

McMaster Marauders finished first in the West at 15-2 while Windsor Lancers were third at 10-7 and the Brock Badgers and Western Mustangs tied for fourth at 7-10. Brock won the tie-breaker to grab the division’s final playoff berth.

Toronto Varsity Blues finished atop the East Division at 17-1 while the Queen’s Gaels were second at 14-4 and Nipissing Lakers fourth at 9-9.

Saturday’s other quarter-finals have McMaster hosting Nipissing, Toronto hosting Brock and Queen’s hosting Windsor.
