Gryphon volleyball men swept by Toronto

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons fell below the .500 winning percentage in OUA men’s volleyball league play as they were swept 3-0 by the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday at Toronto’s Goldring Centre.

The Varsity Blues won 25-17, 25-16, 25-22.

The match was the first league outing of 2019 for the Gryphs who had finished 2018 league play with a 3-0 loss to the McMaster Marauders.

Toronto collected 38 kills, six aces, 34 assists, 40 digs and seven blocks assists in Saturday’s match while the Gryphs had 31 kills, an ace, 28 assists, 28 digs and a block.

Zach Newman led Guelph with 13 kills and six digs while Zarko Ubiparp had six kills and four digs and Oliver Hissink had four kills, two assists, an ace and three digs.

Chris Towe had 12 kills, an ace and six digs for Toronto while Alex Barnes had 10 kills and six digs and Nicholas Trewern had seven kills, five digs and two blocks.

The loss leaves the Gryphs at 3-4 while the Varsity Blues move to 7-3.

The Gryphs are back in action Sunday when they’re to play Peterborough’s Trent Excalibur (0-9) at the Trent Athletic Centre starting at 6 p.m.
