Gryphon volleyball men swept by Waterloo

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their second consecutive loss as they were swept 3-0 by the Waterloo Warriors Sunday at Waterloo Physical Activities Complex.

The Warriors won 25-19, 25-19, 26-24 to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Waterloo had a kill percentage of .225 while the Gryphs were at .065 and had 37 kills to 25 by Guelph. The Gryphs had nine blocks while Waterloo had 20.

Oliver Hissink had eight kills, two saves, two assists, three digs and two blocks for the Gryphs while Zarko Ubiparip had seven kills, an assist, a dig and two blocks and Jakson Paterson had four kills and an ace.

Deman Dulat had 10 kills, an assist, an ace, four digs and two blocks for Waterloo while Nolan Spencer had nine kills, two aces, three digs and two blocks and Jacob Nesbitt had seven kills and four blocks.

The Gryphs are fourth in the West Division at 8-6. They trail the McMaster Marauders who are at 12-2 and the Windsor Lancers and Western Mustangs are both at 9-4. Waterloo’s at 6-8.

Top four in the division qualify for the playoffs and the Gryphs, who have lost two consecutive matches, hold their playoff destiny in their own hands as they have three games to go in their regular season and they’re against the three teams currently ahead of them in the division. They’re to host McMaster Friday at 8 p.m., play the Lancers at Windsor Feb. 22 and the Mustangs at Western Feb. 23.
