Gryphon volleyball men swept by Western, too

LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons completed their OUA men’s volleyball league’s regular season with their fifth consecutive loss as they were swept 3-0 by the Western Mustangs Saturday at Western’s Alumni Hall.

The Gryphs haven’t won in February, their last victory being a 3-2 edging of the Brock Badgers at home Jan. 31.

Saturday, Western won 25-20, 25-22, 25-18.

The Mustangs had a .242 kill percentage with 42 kills and 18 errors while the Gryphs were at .120 with 28 kills and 17 errors.

The Gryphs, though, did get 14 players into the match while Western used the same seven players in all three sets.

While the Gryphs were locked into a fourth-place finish in the West Division, the Mustangs were trying to secure second and they accomplished that with the win. While Western can finish in a tie with the Windsor Lancers, the Mustangs will win the tie-breaker thanks to a 3-1 loss to the Lancers during regular-season play. Western won the other match with Windsor 3-0 and the tie-breaker will be decided using set wins.

Oliver Hissink had eight kills and five digs for the Gryphs against Western while Jakson Paterson had six kills and two digs and Zarko Ubiparip had five kills and five digs.

Gianfranco Sartor had 13 kills and 10 digs for Western while Jackson Bere had nine kills, two digs and two blocks and Evan Hammond had eight kills, two digs and a block.

As the fourth-place finisher in the West, the Gryphs are to play the Queen’s Gaels, first-place finisher in the East, at Kingston in next Saturday’s quarter-finals.
