Gryphon volleyball men to battle McMaster for bronze

HAMILTON – The Guelph Gryphons are to play for bronze in the OUA men’s volleyball Final Four weekend at McMaster’s Burridge Gym Saturday.

The Gryphs were dropped into the bronze-medal match following a 3-1 loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues in Friday’s semifinals.

Toronto won 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 25-23.

As the game was a close affair throughout. So were the team stats.

The Gryphs had a .178 kill percentage with 43 kills, 34 assists, five aces, 37 digs and seven blocks. Toronto had a .208 kill percentage with 44 kills, 43 assists, five aces, 38 digs and 10 blocks.

Jonathan Pickett had 19 blocks for the Gryphs while Gideon Dresser had 29 assists and two aces. Zarko Ubiparip also had two aces and two blocks while Ben Kissack had 13 digs and Jakson Paterson had three blocks.

Chris Towe had 18 kills and three blocks for Toronto while Evan Falardeau had 14 kills. Jordan Figueira had 40 assists, two aces and 10 digs. Nicholas Trewern had 13 digs and Jasper Neale had three blocks.

The Gryphs are to play the McMaster Marauders in the bronze-medal game after the Marauders were edged 3-2 by the Queen’s Gaels.

The bronze-medal match is set for 5:30 p.m. while the Gaels and Varsity Blues are to battle in the Forsyth Cup final at 8 p.m.
