Gryphon volleyball men topped by Ryerson

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons took the first set before the undefeated Ryerson Rams came to life to claim a 3-1 win in OUA men’s volleyball play Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

Ryerson won 18-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-21 to remain unbeaten in six league games.

Guelph scored the first three points of the opening set, but Ryerson rallied to tie it at 11-11 before the hosts went on a final run to win the set.

The teams were even at 7-7 in the second set before the Rams pulled away for the win.

The third set was even throughout while the Gryphs made a late charge to make the fourth set close after they had trailed by seven.

Zach Newman had eight kills, an ace, nine digs and a block for the Gryphs while Kendrick Kerr had eight kills, a dig and two blocks. Jackson Paterson had five kills, an ace, four digs and three blocks and Josh Green had six kills, an ace and five digs and Sam Kloke had four kills, 27 assists, an ace and seven digs.

Lucas Coleman collected 16 kills, 12 digs and a block for Ryerson while Brendan Kewin had 16 kills, an ace, eight digs and two blocks. Navreet Suhan followed with six kills, an ace, a dig and two blocks and Brett Whitley had six kills, three assists, two digs and a block and Adam Anagnostopoulos had 34 assists, eight kills and two blocks.

The Gryphs finish the 2017 segment of their schedule at 4-5. They’re to return to league play Jan. 19 when they host the West Division-leading McMaster Marauders (6-1).
