Gryphon volleyball men win to grab share of best in West

NORTH BAY – The Guelph Gryphons moved into a tie for top spot in the OUA men’s volleyball league’s West Division standings with a 3-1 victory over the Nipissing Lakers Saturday at Nipissing’s Robert J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre.

The win lifts Guelph’s record to 7-3 and they’re deadlocked with the McMaster Marauders. However, McMaster has two games in hand at 7-1.

The Gryphs had 11 aces in Saturday’s match while Nipissing had three and Guelph had 52 digs, five more than the Lakers. Nipissing did have 45 kills (39 for Guelph) and eight blocks (five for Guelph).

Jonathan Pickett had 10 kills, two aces, eight digs and two blocks for the Gryphs while Oliver Hissink had nine kills, four aces and six digs. Zarko Ubiparip followed with eight kills, three aces and five digs while Jakson Paterson had five kills and seven digs and Gideon Dresser had a kill, 34 assists, nine digs and two blocks.

Jackson Young collected 12 kills, two aces, eight digs and 2.5 blocks for Nipissing while Zach Thibault had 11 kills and 12 digs, Liam Ludlow had 11 kills and nine digs, Jeremie Murray had six kills, an ace, a dig and two blocks and Josh Nicholson had 33 assists and three digs.

The loss leaves Nipissing tied for third in the East at 5-4.

The Gryphs are to battle the York Lions (fifth in the East at 4-5) Sunday at 3 p.m. at York’s Tait McKenzie Centre.
