Gryphon volleyball women clipped by Waterloo

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons are standing at the brink of elimination from the OUA women’s volleyball playoff race following a 3-1 loss to the fourth-ranked Waterloo Warriors Sunday at Waterloo’s Physical Activities Complex.

The loss leaves the Gryphs tied for fifth in the West Division at 7-9 with three matches to play. The Western Mustangs are at 10-5 and McMaster Marauders are at 10-6. A win by either of them or a loss by the Gryphs in any of their final three games of the regular season will end Guelph’s playoff aspirations.

The win clinched first in the division for Waterloo (15-1).

The Gryphs took the opening set 25-23 before the Warriors won three in a row – 25-18, 25-14, 25-23.

The Gryphs had a .092 kill percentage with 42 kills while Waterloo was at .167 with 52 kills.

Michaela Hellinga had 20 kills, five digs and two blocks for Guelph while Cassidy Collins had five kills, an ace, two digs and seven blocks. Noa Pijil had four kills, two aces, eight digs and two blocks.

Ella Stewart collected 16 kills, an ace, an assist, two digs and six blocks for Waterloo while Sarah Glynn had 16 kills, two aces, six digs and a block and Claire Mackenzie had eight kills, an ace and 10 digs.

The Gryphs are to complete the home portion of their schedule Friday with a 6 p.m. game against McMaster at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

They’re also to play the Lancers (7-8) at Windsor Feb. 22 and the Mustangs at Western Feb. 23.
