Gryphon volleyball women drop fourth match in a row

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their fourth consecutive loss in OUA women’s volleyball play as they were defeated 3-1 by the Toronto Varsity Blues Sunday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

Toronto took the first two sets 25-15 and 27-25 before the hosts scored a 27-25 win in the third set. However, the Varsity Blues responded with a 25-14 win in the fourth set to end the match.

Toronto recorded 55 kills, 10 aces, 71 digs and 13 blocks while the Gryphs had 43 kills, four aces, 64 digs and eight blocks. The visitors had an attack kill percentage of .213 while the Gryphs were at .099.

Jade Ziebarth led the Gryphs with 15 kills, an ace and three digs while Lisa Wedel had seven kills, an ace, a dig and five blocks. Noa Pijl had five kills, a dig and a block while Alexandra Curran had two kills, 33 assists, two aces, 14 digs and a block and Tara Tanasijevic had four assists and 25 digs.

Alina Dormann had 15 kills, two aces, eight digs and a block for Toronto while Jenna Woock had nine kills, a dig and six blocks, Caleigh Cruickshank had 12 kills, 16 digs and three blocks, Anna Licht had five kills, three assists, five aces, three digs and a block and Lidya Canturk had three kills, 29 assists, an ace and 10 digs.

After starting their season at 3-1, the loss to Toronto drops the Gryphs to 3-5. They’re fifth in the West Division while Toronto is tied for first in the East at 8-1.

The Gryphs are to complete the 2019 portion of their league schedule with a match against the Windsor Lancers (3-4) Sunday at 2 p.m. at the GGAC.
