Gryphon volleyball women drop opener to Waterloo

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered a 3-1 loss to the Waterloo Warriors in their OUA women’s volleyball season opener Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs took the opening set 25-20 before Waterloo won three in a row by 25-19, 25-22 and 25-18 scores.

Noa Pijil had 14 kills for the Gryphs while Lisa Wedel and Hazel Atkins had eight apiece. Alex Curran had 40 assists and three aces while Tara Tanasijevic had 22 digs and Cassidy Collins had three blocks.

Claire Mackenzie had 21 kills and seven aces for Waterloo while Claire Gagne had 43 assists and had Sarah Remedios 15 digs.

The Gryphs are scheduled to start the season with four consecutive home matches. They’re to host the York Lions Friday at 6 p.m., Western Mustangs Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. and Windsor Lancers Nov. 11 at 1 p.m.
