Gryphon volleyball women drop Trent

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons remained in the thick of the battle for the final two playoff sports in the OUA women’s volleyball league’s West Division with a sweep of the Trent Excalibur Saturday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The win lifts the Gryphs to 7-10 and a tie for third in the West with the Windsor Lancers. However, there are five teams in the hunt for the final two playoff spots. McMaster Marauders lead the division at 14-2 and the Western Mustangs are second at 11-4. They’ve secured playoff berths. Brock Badgers are fifth at 6-9, Waterloo Warriors sixth at 5-10 and Lakehead Thunderwolves seventh at 4-13. Top four qualify for the playoffs.

The Gryphs downed winless Trent, now 0-14, by winning the sets by 25-14, 25-23 and 25-19 scores.

Libby Donevan had 14 kills, an ace, two digs and two blocks for the Gryphs while Michaela Hellinga had 13 kills and 11 digs and Jessica Gormley had 11 kills, two aces and two digs. Alex Curran had three kills, 11 digs, a block and 37 assists while Jessica Chung had seven digs and an assist.

Camile Garzon had 11 kills, two aces and five digs for the Excalibur while Genna Saunders had nine kills, an ace and seven digs.

The Gryphs’ place in the standings might have changed by the time they next hit the floor as they’re the West team with a bye next weekend. They’re to complete their regular season with a pair of road games as they’re to play Western at London Feb. 23 and the Lancers at Windsor Feb. 25.
