Gryphon volleyball women dropped in return from break

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons returned to OUA women’s volleyball league play following the exam and Christmas break with a 3-1 loss to the East Division-leading Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday at Toronto’s Goldring Centre.

The Varsity Blues prevailed 25-15, 21-25, 25-19, 25-16.

Toronto had a total of 54 kills, eight aces and 49 assists in the match while the Gryphs had 26 kills, five aces and 24 assists.

Guelph did get 27 blocks to nine for Toronto.

Noa Pijil of the Gryphs had seven kills, an ace and six blocks while Lisa Wedel had three kills, an assist and nine blocks.

For Toronto, Alina Dormann had 20 kills, an ace and two blocks and Jenna Woock had eight kills, two aces and four blocks.

The loss was the third in a row for the Gryphs and it leaves them at 4-5.

The Varsity Blues improve to 8-2. They’re tied for the lead in the East Division with the Ryerson Rams who have a match in hand at 8-1.

The Gryphs will try to put the brakes on their losing skid Sunday when they play the Trent Excalibur (1-9) at the Trent Athletic Centre in Peterborough. Game time is 4 p.m.
