Gryphon volleyball women edge Waterloo to finish 3rd in West
WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons wrapped up their OUA women’s volleyball league’s regular season with a 3-2 victory over the Waterloo Warriors Saturday at Waterloo’s Physical Activities Complex.
The Gryphs won the tight five-set match 25-18, 24-26, 25-11, 22-25, 15-13.
Guelph had a .219 kill percentage with 67 kills, nine aces, 103 digs and seven blocks. Waterloo had a .149 kill percentage with 55 kills, six aces, 90 digs and nine blocks.
Jade Ziebarth had 23 kills and 17 digs for the Gryphs while Lisa Wedel had 18 kills and two blocks. Alexandra Curran had 61 assists and 25 digs while Alexandra Proulx had four aces and 18 digs while Tara Tanasijevic had 25 digs.
Sarah Glynn had 23 kills and 19 digs for Waterloo while Claire Gagne had 46 assists and 14 digs. Karen Fan served up two aces while Jenna Gravina had 23 digs, Mackenzie Vallee had 15 digs and Serena Otshudi had four blocks.
The result leaves the Gryphs third in the West Division at 12-7 and Waterloo tied for fourth in the division with the Windsor Lancers at 11-8. The Warriors won the tie-breaker to get the division’s final playoff berth.
Brock Badgers were first in the West at 14-5 and Western Mustangs were second at 13-6.
The four playoff qualifiers in the East are the Toronto Varsity Blues (17-2), Ryerson Rams (16-3), Queen’s Gaels (12-7) and York Lions (10-9).
The quarter-finals are set for Saturday with the Gryphs playing Ryerson at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre at 1 p.m. Waterloo is to play the Varsity Blues at Toronto, Brock is to host York and Western is to host Queen’s.
Ryerson edged the Gryphs 3-2 in their only regular-season meeting Nov. 8 at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.
