Gryphon volleyball women edged by Nipissing

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons opened their OUA women’s volleyball regular season with a 3-2 loss to the Nipissing Lakers Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

After dropping the first two sets by 25-19 and 25-20 scores, the Gryphs came back to knot the match with 25-16 and 25-17 wins. However, Nipissing took the match with a 15-9 victory in the fifth set.

Sophie Ferncak had 15 kills and two blocks for the Gryphs while Jaymie Stephenson had 10 kills and four aces. Maia Dan had seven kills, two aces and six digs while Ella Carter had two aces, 31 assists and 12 digs. Ella Mackenzie had two blocks while Alexa Shields had seven assists and Mackenzie Proulx had three assists and 16 digs.

Paige Owen had 12 kills and nine digs for Nipissing while Amy Connelly also had 12 kills. Oceane Raymond had three aces while Kristine Leger had three blocks, Rebecca Illingworth had 27 assists and Kassandra Pavlic had nine digs.

Nipissing had a .233 kill percentage while the Gryphs were at .140.

The Gryphs had 11 aces to nine for the Lakers and 55 digs, three more than Nipissing. The Lakers also had 51 kills, seven blocks and 43 assists while the Gryphs had 46 kills, four blocks and 42 assists.

The two teams are to meet again Saturday at 6 p.m. at the GGAC.
