Gryphon volleyball women edged by Toronto

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons were edged 3-2 by the Toronto Varsity Blues in OUA women’s volleyball play Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The visitors prevailed 18-25, 25-20, 25-12, 20-25, 15-8.

Toronto led in all five sets and scored the first point in all but the first set when the Gryphs hit for the first four points of the match.

Libby Donevan had 15 kills, two digs and eight blocks for the Gryphs while Michaela Hellinga had 13 kills, an ace and 10 digs and Hazel Atkins had eight kills, an ace and four digs. Jessica Chung had five kills, two aces and six digs, Jessica Gormley had four kills, two digs and three blocks and Alex Curran had two kills, 10 digs, three blocks and 38 assists.

Alina Dormann had 23 kills, six digs and three blocks for Toronto while Anna Feore had 10 kills, an ace, 15 digs and three blocks and Jenna Woock had five kills, two aces, two digs and two blocks.

The Gryphs are tied for fourth in the West Division with the Brock Badgers. Guelph is at 6-10 while Brock has a game in hand at 6-9. The Waterloo Warriors are sixth at 5-9 and have two games in hand on the Gryphs. The Windsor Lancers are third at 7-9.

Top four qualify for the crossover quarter-finals.

Toronto is tied for second in the East at 11-4.

The Gryphs have three games left on their regular-season schedule. They’re to host the Trent Excalibur (0-13) Saturday at 6 p.m. at the GGAC, then get almost two weeks off of league play before playing the Western Mustangs (11-4) at Western’s Alumni Hall Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. and Windsor at Windsor’s St. Denis Centre Feb. 25 at 1 p.m.
