
Gryphon volleyball women edged in return to play
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons were nipped 3-2 by the Waterloo Warriors in their return to OUA women’s volleyball league play Thursday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.
The game was the first for the Gryphons in more than two months following a lengthy break for exams, Christmas and the pandemic shutdown. Their previous match had been a loss to the Brock Badgers at home on Nov. 28.

The game was also the first for a Gryphon squad in the return to play.
The Gryphs dropped the final two sets for the loss. They had won the opener 25-18 before falling 25-22 in the second set and winning the third set by the same 25-22 score. Waterloo won the final two sets 25-18 and 15-12.
The Warriors had 60 kills, six aces, 13 blocks, 55 assists and 72 digs while Guelph had 51 kills, five aces, eight blocks, 43 assists and 94 digs.
Leaders for the Gryphs were Sophie Fernback with 15 kills, Alex Curran with three aces and 36 assists, Lisa Wedel with three blocks and Ashley Vang with 22 digs.
Sarah Glynn had 16 kills for Waterloo while Katrine Eistrat and Mackenize Vallee each had two aces, Grace Crooks had four blocks, Eistrat had 53 assists and Jenna Gravina had 23 digs.
The Gryphs and Warriors are to play again Saturday at Waterloo’s PAC Gym. Game time is 1 p.m.
