Gryphon volleyball women hit for first win of season
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons recorded their first victory of the OUA women’s volleyball season Sunday as they swept the McMaster Marauders 3-0 at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.
The win came in the eighth game of the season and was the first victory since a 3-1 triumph over the Western Mustangs in the OUA’s bronze-medal match March 9, 2020. The 2020-2021 season was cancelled due to the global pandemic.

Sunday, the Gryphs won 25-22, 29-27, 25-19.
The Gryphs had a .279 kill percentage while McMaster was at .125.
Although the Gryphs swept the match, the stats were fairly even as both teams had 40 kills and four blocks. The Gryphs led 37-35 in assists while McMaster led 6-4 in aces and 47-44 in digs.
Sophie Fernback had nine kills, an assist and 10 digs for the Gryphs while Lisa Wedel had nine kills and Jessica Chung had eight kills, two aces and a block. Alex Curran had 36 assists, eight digs and an ace and Ashley Vang had 17 digs.
Sullie Sundara had 12 kills, a block and 11 digs for McMaster while Jessie Nairn had 10 kills, an ace, a block, an assist and nine digs while Emma McKinnon had nine kills. Chayse Victoria had four aces and 27 assists and Hayley Brookes had 13 digs.
The win lifts the Gryphs to a tie for fifth in the West Division. They’re at 1-7 while the Windsor Lancers are 1-8 and Lakehead Thunderwolves are at 0-7.
The Gryphs have two games remaining on their regular season, both this week at home. They’re to host Western Thursday at 6 p.m. and Windsor Sunday at 1 p.m.
