Gryphon volleyball women nip Lions for third consecutive win
TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons ran their win streak in OUA women’s volleyball play to three matches with a 3-2 edging of the York Lions at York’s Tait Mckenzie Centre Sunday.
The Gryphs won the first two sets of the match before the Lions responded with two wins of their own. Guelph won it with a 15-12 victory in the fifth set.
Team stats for the match were fairly even as both had a .246 kill percentage. The Gryphs had 13 service aces to five for the Lions while York had 63 kills, two more than Guelph. The Gryphs had 85 digs, two more than York, and seven solo blocks, four more than the Lions. Both teams had eight assisted blocks.
Category leaders for the Gryphs were Jade Ziebarth with 20 kills and five aces, Alexandra Curran with 40 assists and 23 digs, Jessica Chung, Lisa Wedel and Cassidy Collins with two solo blocks apiece and Ella MacKenzie with four assisted blocks.
Sarah Williams had 16 kills for York while Chiara Da Silva had 42 assists and 16 digs, Olivia Kim and Williams each had two aces and Wesley-Ann Bailey had two solo blocks and three assisted blocks.
The result leaves the Gryphs and McMaster Marauders tied for third in the West Division with 6-5 records and York fourth in the East at 5-6.
The Gryphs are to host McMaster Jan. 25 at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre. Game time is 6 p.m.
