Gryphon volleyball women nipped by Ottawa at McMaster tourney

HAMILTON – The Guelph Gryphons opened the McMaster Thanksgiving Classic women’s volleyball tournament with a 3-2 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees Thursday.

Ottawa won 22-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-15 and 15-10.

The Gryphs are to play the Lakehead Thunderwolves Friday at 1 p.m. in the tournament.

In other matches at the tournament Thursday, the Ryerson Rams swept the Brock Badgers 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 29-27), Waterloo Warriors dropped the Nipissing Lakers 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-23) and McMaster defeated Lakehead 3-1 (25-12, 15-25, 25-16, 25-22).

If the Gryphs win Friday’s match, they’ll play in the fifth-place game Saturday at 11:30 a.m. If Lakehead wins Friday, Guelph will play in the seventh-place game Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

The Gryphs are coming off a bronze-medal win at the Ottawa Gee-Gees Preseason Classic in their first action of the season.

At Ottawa, the Gryphs defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks 2-0 (25-15, 25-17) and Sherbrooke Vert et Or 2-1 (27-25, 17-25, 25-21), lost to the Toronto Varsity Blues 2-0 (25-16, 25-22), and defeated the Montreal Carabins 2-1 (26-28, 25-13, 25-19) and McMaster 3-2 (18-25, 25-16, 26-15, 21-25, 15-11).

The Gryphs are also to play in the West Coast Classic at Vancouver Oct. 11 to 14 before opening their OUA season with a home match against Waterloo Oct. 27.
