Gryphon volleyball women out of playoff hunt

WINDSOR – The Guelph Gryphons saw their hopes of qualifying for the OUA women’s volleyball playoffs end Friday night when they were handed a 3-1 setback by the Windsor Lancers at Windsor’s St. Denis Centre.

With only a match against the Western Mustangs Saturday at Western left on their schedule, the Gryphs can finish no higher than sixth in the West Division. Top four qualify for the playoffs.

Friday, the Lancers prevailed 25-22, 12-25, 25-16, 25-15.

The Gryphs had a .100 kill percentage with 39 kills and 25 errors while Windsor was at .169 with 44 kills and 21 errors.

Sophia Herrera collected 13 kills, an assist, an ace, eight digs and two blocks for the Gryphs while Michaela Hellinga had 10 kills, an ace, nine digs and three blocks and Noa Pijil had six kills, two aces, 11 digs and a block.

Paige Phills had 11 kills, four aces, five digs and four blocks for Windsor while Hannah Camrass had nine kills, three assists, an ace, 10 digs and two blocks and Alana Gyemi had seven kills, an assist, an ace, three digs and four blocks.

The result leaves the Gryphs at 8-10 and Windsor at 10-8. The Lancers and McMaster Marauders are tied for the fourth and final playoff berth in the West heading into their final regular-season matches Sunday afternoon. Windsor is to host the West-leading Waterloo Warriors (16-2) while McMaster is to play the East-leading Ryerson Rams (16-2) at Toronto.

Guelph’s Saturday game against Western (13-5) is to start at 6 p.m.
