Gryphon volleyball women rebound to top Nipissing

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons rebounded from their opening-match defeat Friday night to down the Nipissing Lakers 3-1 in an OUA women’s volleyball league rematch Saturday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs won 25-23, 25-15, 21-25, 25-23 Saturday.

The locals had a .182 kill percentage while Nipissing was at .105.

The Gryphs had nine aces to eight for the Lakers and both teams had seven blocks. Nipissing scored small victories in most of the other categories with 44 kills to Guelph’s 43, 41 assists to Guelph’s 40 and 48 digs to Guelph’s 43.

Jaymie Stephenson had 12 kills and three blocks for the Gryphs while Sophie Fernback had nine kills, two blocks and six digs and Maia Dan had nine kills. Ella Carter had four aces, 30 assists and 16 digs while Ella Mackenzie had two blocks, Mackenzie Proulx had five assists and 11 digs and Alexa Shields had five assists.

Oceane Raymond had 14 kills and four aces for Nipissing while Madison Murphy had three blocks and Logan Garvey had 27 assists and 10 digs.

Next up for the Gryphs is a pair of matches against the Brock Badgers. They’re to play Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre and next Sunday at 1 p.m. at Brock’s Bob Davis Gymnasium. Those matches are to be the first of the regular season for Brock.
