
Gryphon volleyball women sweep preseason opener
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons swept all five sets from the Memorial Sea-Hawks of Newfoundland in the Guelph squad’s OUA women’s volleyball preseason opener Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
The Gryphs won 25-11, 25-17, 25-17, 25-18, 15-11.
The teams played five sets because it was a preseason match and a chance to get all their players into game action prior to their respective conference play.
The Gryphs came out on top of all the team categories as they had 53 kills to Memorial’s 38, 17 aces to Memorial’s nine, eight blocks to Memorial’s seven, 48 assists to Memorial’s 32 and 53 digs to Memorial’s 45.
Leah Stewart had eight kills and eight digs for the Gryphs while Samantha Ingleton had six aces and seven kills and Sophie Fernback had seven kills. Alexa Shields had four aces and 22 assists while Ella Mackenzie had three aces and a block and Sophia Matias and Maja Dan each had two blocks. Ella Carter had 22 assists while Sydney Simonson had two and the Mackenzies – Proulx and Scott – had seven digs and six digs respectively.
Sarah Trowbridge had nine kills and 12 digs for Memorial while Lydia Grawer had four aces, Janeen Pellatt had three blocks and Karen Greek had 21 assists.
The Gryphons are to play in the Ottawa Gee-Gees Preseason Classic this coming weekend. They’re to play the Montreal Carabins and Thompson Rivers Wolfpack of Kamloops Friday and the UQAM Citadins of Montreal and Dalhousie Tigers of Halifax Saturday. Their Sunday opponent will be decided through their results of those four matches.
The Gryphs are to begin league play Nov. 4 and 5 with matches against the Nipissing Lakers at the GGAC at 6 p.m. both days.
