Gryphon volleyball women swept by McMaster

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons were swept 3-0 in a pair of matches with the McMaster Marauders at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre on the weekend.

McMaster won 25-19, 28-26, 25-16 Friday and 25-19, 25-22, 25-23 Saturday.

The losses for the Gryphs were the first in league play this season.

Saturday, Sophia Kalbfleisch had seven kills for the Gryphs while Hailey Holland had six kills and three aces and Mia Miskovic had six kills. Alexa Shields had 21 assists and 14 digs, Alexandra Nicholson-Clarke had two aces, Briar Crerar had eight digs and Payton King had seven digs.

Friday, Crerar had eight kills and nine digs while Kalbfleisch had eight kills and four digs and Shields had 27 assists.

For McMaster in the two matches combined, Sullie Sundara had 23 kills, seven aces and 10 digs, Jenna Woock had 13 kills, Olivia Julien had 17 kills, three aces and 19 digs, Emma Dhanjal had three aces, Hayley Brookes had 11 digs, Ellie Hatashita had nine kills and nine digs, Abby Delamere had three kills and six digs and Christina Stratford had 18 digs.

For the two matches, the Gryphs had 64 kills, 11 aces, seven blocks, 54 assists, 75 digs and a .152 kill percentage while McMaster had 75 kills, 23 aces, six blocks, 64 assists, 93 digs and a .218 kill percentage.

McMaster, Brock Badgers and Queen’s Gaels enter the break for exams and Christmas tied atop the league standings with 7-1 records. The Gryphs and Western Mustangs follow with 5-2 marks while the Toronto Metropolitan Bold are at 5-3.

Next up for the Gryphs is to be a home match against the Toronto Varsity Blues (3-4) Jan. 4 at the GGAC at 6 p.m.
