Gryphon volleyball women swept in home opener

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons completed the 2021 portion of their OUA women’s volleyball season with their home opener Sunday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

And for the third time this season they were swept 3-0 by the Brock Badgers.

The Gryphs have lost all four of their outings as they were also edged 3-2 by the Windsor Lancers at Windsor.

Sunday, Brock won 25-20, 25-17, 25-14.

The Badgers had 54 kills to 25 for the Gryphs, four aces to Guelph’s three, 45 assists to Guelph’s 21 and 44 digs to Guelph’s 40. The Gryphs did have eight blocks, one more than the Badgers.

The Gryphs were ahead 3-2 in the first set, but never led again in the match. They did, however, whittled Brock’s lead down to three late in both the first and second sets as the Badgers scored the final two points of the opening set after the Gryphs closed the gap to 23-20. The visitors ran off five consecutive points in the second set to turn a 20-17 lead into the set victory. In the third and final set, the Badgers scored eight of the final nine points to grab the win after Guelph had closed to 17-13.

Sophie Fernback had seven kills and three digs for the Gryphs while Jaymie Stephenson had five kills, an ace and two digs and Cassidy Collins had four kills, four blocks and two digs. Noa Pijl and Ella Carter each had an ace and five digs while Ashley Vang had 10 digs and Jessica Chung had a block and five digs. Alex Curran had 14 assists and three digs.

Sadie Dicks collected 14 kills, two aces and four digs for Brock while Emily Foest had 12 kills and seven digs and Madison Chimienti had 10 kills, an ace and six digs. Christina Jovetic had eight kills while Samantha Casey had an ace, Aleiah Torres had 20 digs and Sara Rohr had four kills, 40 assists and three digs.

The match was the first of three consecutive home games for the Gryphs as they’re to host Windsor Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. and the Waterloo Warriors Jan. 22 at 1 p.m.
