Gryphon volleyball women swept in season opener
ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons were swept by the Brock Badgers 3-0 in their OUA women’s volleyball season opener Saturday at Brock’s Bob Davis Gymnasium.
The Badgers won 25-16, 25-23, 25-23.

While the Gryphs served up nine aces to Brock’s four and both teams had identical numbers in blocks, the other categories were dominated by the host Badgers.
Brock had 46 kills, twice as many as the Gryphs, 45 assists to Guelph’s 19 and 40 digs to 26 by the Gryphs.
Lisa Wedel had five kills and eight blocks for the Gryphs while Noa Pijl had six kills, four blocks and five digs. Jaymie Stephenson had four kills and an ace while Cassidy Collins had four aces, Jessica Chung had two aces, two blocks and four digs. Ella Carter had 16 assists, Alex Shields had three assists and Ashley Vang had 10 digs.
Category leaders for Brock were Sara Rohr with three aces and 34 assists, Sadie Dick with 13 kills, Grace Pyatt with three blocks and Aleiah Torres with 13 digs.
The match was the first of the season for the Gryphs as they played no preseason games.
They get two weeks to prepare for their next match as they’re to play the Windsor Lancers at Windsor Nov. 20 and wrap up the 2021 portion of their schedule with two more matches against Brock – Nov. 26 at Brock and Nov. 28 in their home opener at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
