Gryphon volleyball women take three close ones from Nipissing
NORTH BAY – The Guelph Gryphons opened the 2020 portion of their OUA women’s volleyball season with a 3-0 sweep of the Nipissing Lakers Saturday at Nipissing’s Robert J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre.
The Gryphs won three close sets for the victory as they triumphed 25-23, 25-21 and 25-22.
The match was close throughout as could be seen by the team stats. Both teams had 33 kills, 33 assists and nine aces. The Gryphs had 63 digs to 58 for Nipissing and the locals had nine total blocks while the Lakers had six.
Jade Ziebarth had 11 kills, three aces and 10 digs for the Gryphs while Alexandra Proulx had eight kills, 11 digs and four blocks. Lisa Wedel had seven kills, five digs and four blocks while Jessica Chung had seven digs, Ella MacKenzie had three aces, Alexandra Curran had 22 assists, two aces and 10 digs and Tara Tanasijevic had four assists and 18 digs.
Averi Bodnar had eight kills and six digs for Nipissing while Megan Winter had six kills and two aces, Shayla Kessler had six kills and eight digs, Rebecca Illingworth had 23 assists, four aces and 12 digs and Shannon Lebreux had four blocks.
The win squares Guelph’s record at 5-5, good for a tie for fourth in the West Division. Nipissing is fifth in the East Division at 2-8.
The Gryphs are to play the York Lions (fourth in the East at 5-5) Sunday at 1 p.m. at York’s Tait McKenzie Centre.
