
Gryphon volleyball women take two from Lakehead
THUNDER BAY – The Guelph Gryphons put an end to their 10-match losing streak in OUA women’s volleyball play by taking a pair of weekend matches with the Lakehead Thunderwolves at Lakehead’s C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse.
The Gryphs won 3-2 Saturday after posting a 3-0 victory Friday.
Saturday, the Gryphs won 21-25, 25-20, 27-29, 25-20, 15-12.
The Gryphs had a .402 kill percentage in the match while Lakehead had a .350 kill percentage.
Guelph had 61 kills, six aces, four blocks, 59 assists and 48 digs while Lakehead had 55 kills, seven aces, seven blocks, 49 assists and 53 digs.
Hailey Holland had 20 kills and two blocks for the Gryphs while Briar Crerar had 13 kills, an ace and nine digs and Samantha Ingleton had 11 kills and two blocks. Ella Carter had two aces, 47 assists and 10 digs while Ella MacKenzie had an ace and two blocks, Alexa Shields had eight assists, Mackenzie Proulx had three assists and Leah Stewart had seven digs.
Alysha Goundrey had 18 kills and four blocks for Lakehead while Jaimie Couvrette and Tiana Cowper each had two aces, Milena Ljubicic had four blocks, Alexis Cancade had 44 assists and Rebekah Hara had 14 digs.
Friday, the Gryphons won 25-18, 25-21, 25-20.
The Gryphs had a .480 kill percentage in the match while Lakehead was at .156.
Guelph had 37 kills, four aces, 12 blocks, 31 assists and 31 digs while Lakehead had 26 kills, four aces, a block, 20 assists and 30 digs.
Ingleton had eight blocks and eight kills for the Gryphs while Holland had 12 kills and Sophie Kalbfleisch had eight kills, an ace and four assists. Crerar had an ace and seven digs while MacKenzie had an ace and two blocks, Jaymie Stephenson had two blocks, Carter had 18 assists and eight digs, Shields had five assists and Proulx had five digs.
Goundrey had seven kills for Lakehead while Megan Nahacewsky had two aces, Couvrette had the block, Payton Leflar had 10 assists and Rebekah Hara had 12 digs.
The wins were the first for the Gryphs since they swept a pair of matches with the Trent Excalibur Nov. 19 and 20 at Peterborough.
The wins allow the Gryphs, who have been eliminated from the playoff race, to jump over the Thunderwolves in the league standings. The Gryphs are 11th at 5-13 while Lakehead is 12th at 4-14. Top eight qualify for the playoffs.
The Gryphs are to complete their season with a pair of matches against the RMC Paladins (0-18). They’re to play at 6 p.m. both Friday and Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
