Gryphon volleyball women take two from Lakehead

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons opened their OUA women’s volleyball season with a pair of wins over the Lakehead Thunderwolves at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs won 3-1 Friday night and 3-0 Saturday night.

Friday, Guelph won 25-16, 25-19, 22-25, 25-11.

Sophia Kalbfleisch had 12 kills and nine digs for the Gryphs while Briar Crerar had 10 kills, two aces and 16 digs, Samantha Ingleton had 10 kills and two blocks, Alexa Shields had three aces, 48 assists and 10 digs, Mia Miskovic had two blocks, Payton King had two two assists and Alexandra Nicholson-Clarke had an ace.

Alysha Goundrey had 11 kills and a block for Lakehead while Tori Dauvin had two aces, Virginie Franks had a block, Payton Leflar had 23 assists and Bekah Hara had 22 digs.

Saturday, Guelph prevailed 25-11, 25-21, 25-21.

Crerar had eight kills, an ace, two blocks and six digs and Hailey Holland had 10 kills, three aces and four blocks. Ingleton collected four digs and an ace while Shields had 27 assists and 16 digs, Kalbfleisch had nine kills, Miskovic had three blocks, Sydney Simonson had four assists and King had three assists.

Cayleigh Fossum had an ace and a block for Lakehead while Lauryn Langley had seven kills, Goundrey had an ace, Milena Ljubicic and Emily Heil each had a block, Leflar had 13 assists and Hara had 11 digs.

For the two games combined, the Gryphs had 100 kills, 42 errors, a .232 kill percentage, 16 aces, 13 blocks, 85 assists and 101 digs. Lakehead had 52 kills, 42 errors, .048 kill percentage, nine aces, six blocks, 47 assists and 85 digs.

The Gryphs are to play the Trent Excalibur (0-2) Friday and Saturday, both at 6 p.m., at the Trent Athletics Centre.
