Gryphon volleyball women top Waterloo for openers

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons opened their OUA women’s volleyball season with a 3-1 victory over the Waterloo Warriors Saturday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

Waterloo took the opening set 28-26 before the Gryphs came back with 25-20, 25-13 and 25-17 wins.

The Gryphs had 59 kills and 11 service aces in the match while Waterloo had 42 kills and eight aces.

Fifth-year left side Jade Ziebarth, a transfer from the Windsor Lancers, had 16 kills, two aces, two assists and 12 digs for the Gryphs while Sasha Meshcherekova had 11 kills and two blocks. Alexandra Proulx had 11 kills, four aces and two blocks while Jessica Chung had two aces, a block and nine digs, Alexandra Curran had 39 assists and Tara Tanasijevic had five  assists and 21 digs.

The leaders for Waterloo were Sarah Glynn with 15 digs, Rachel Eatough with four aces, Sarah Glynn with three blocks, Claire Gagne with 30 assists and Jenna Garvis with 17 digs.

The Gryphs (1-0) are to host the Trent Excalibur (1-0) Sunday at 1 p.m. at the GGAC. The Excalibur edged the Lakehead Thunderwolves 3-2 Saturday night in Peterborough.
