Gryphon women slip by Western Mustangs

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons used a pair of first-period goals to edge the Western Mustangs 3-2 in OUA women’s hockey play Thursday night at the Gryphon Centre.

However, it was Meaghan Chittick’s empty-netter with 1:34 to go in the third period that proved to be the winner.

The Gryphs led 2-1 at the end of the first period after a scoreless second.

Chittick scored with Western having four seconds left on a power play and just 10 seconds after Western netminder Kaitlyn Booth was called to the bench.

The goal was Chittick’s second of the game as she had scored on a power play with 16 seconds to go in the opening period. Maya Graham scored the other goal while Alexie Olivier, Jessica Kouleas, Sydnie Miller and Katherine Heard each had an assist.

Grace Bellamy and Adeline Kristoff (with 50 seconds to go in the game) had a goal apiece for Western while Emma Suitor had an assist.

The Gryphs were outshot 20-15, but they went 1-for-3 on their power play while Western was scoreless on two power plays.

Kathryn Raymond had 18 saves for the Gryphs while Booth had 13 for Western.

The game was the eighth league outing for the Gryphs this season that was decided by a single goal.

Guelph is 7-2-2-2 in league play and second in the West Division while Western is fourth at 5-7-1-0.

The Gryphs are to complete their first semester Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. game at the Gryphon Centre against the Nipissing Lakers (second in East at 10-1-1-0).
