Gryphons blank Brock to open baseball tournament
AJAX – The Guelph Gryphons opened their play in the OUA baseball championship tournament by blanking the Brock Badgers 3-0 Friday at the Ajax Sportsplex.
The Gryphs scored two runs in the second inning of the seven-inning game while their other run came in the sixth.
Troy Lacoste led the locals with a pair of hits while Ashton Patterson, Arthur Kowara, Matthew Gravelle and Craig Henning added one apiece. Gravelle drove in the second-inning runs while Kowara knocked home the other run.
Starter Dylan Clark picked up the win for Guelph. He held Brock to five hits in his stint of 5 2/3 innings while reliever David Bruinsma didn’t allow a hit in the final 1 1/3 innings to get a save. Both fanned two and issued one walk.
Connor Humphrey, Tyler Giancos, Jacob Underwood, Matthew Casburn and David Polson each had a hit for Brock.
Underwood pitched six innings and yielded three earned runs off four hits and four walks. He also had two strikeouts.
The Gryphs and Brock are in Pool D along with the Waterloo Warriors and Ryerson Rams. Waterloo edged Ryerson 1-0 in eight innings Friday. All round-robin games are to be seven innings in length unless they are tied and all round-robin games will be considered ties if the teams are still deadlocked after nine innings.
The Gryphs are to complete their round-robin pool play Saturday as they’re scheduled to play Waterloo at 11 a.m. and Ryerson at 3:30 p.m.
The playoffs are set for Sunday with the championship match slated to go at 4 p.m.
