Gryphons blank Laurier to start their CUFLA season

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons opened their Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association season with a 14-0 blanking of the Laurier Golden Hawks Sunday afternoon at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Cameron MacLeod stopped 12 shots for the shutout.

The Gryphs led 2-0 at the end of the first quarter, 4-0 at halftime and 8-0 at the completion of the third quarter.

Mark Wilson connected for four goals for the hosts while Connor Watson had a hat trick and Ben Doherty added a pair of goals. Getting one goal apiece were Michael Berger, Nicholas Volkov, Bryce Dennis, Nick Nigro and Maxwell McPherson.

Single assists were awarded to Wilson, Doherty, Gabriel Tomazela, Mitchell Ogilvie and Watson.

Nine of the goals came on unassisted efforts.

This year the CUFLA league is divided into three divisions instead of the usual two and teams only play teams in their own division during the regular season.

The Gryphs are in the West Division along with the McMaster Marauders, Brock Badgers, Western Mustangs and Laurier.

Brock defeated McMaster 15-6 Saturday at Brock in the only other game played in the division on opening weekend.

The Gryphs are to play the Marauders at McMaster’s Alumni Field Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.
