Gryphons come back to top Concordia
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons rallied in the fourth quarter to down the Concordia Stingers 81-76 in Canadian university men’s basketball preseason play Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
Concordia had led 20-15 at the end of the first quarter and 43-36 at halftime. The Stingers were still up 58-53 at the end of the third quarter and stretched the advantage to eight points (64-56) with just under seven minutes to go in regulation time.
The Gryphs fought back after that, chipping away at the difference before the teams traded the lead five times in the final two minutes of the match. The Gryphs took the lead for good when Kieran Naus hit a jumper with eight seconds to play and they sank five free throws after that. Concordia also sank two free throws in the final eight seconds.
Tommy Yanchus led the Gryphs with 23 points while J.L. Nwosu scored 13, Malcolm Glanville 12 and Keenan Dowell 11. Nwosu also grabbed eight rebounds.
Olivier Simon had 16 points for Concordia while Aleks Simeunovic followed with 13 and Ali White had 11. Simon hauled down eight rebounds and Adrian Armstrong and Cedrick Coriolan each had three assists.
The win was the second in as many preseason outings for the Gryphons.
The Gryphs are to participate in next week’s Calgary Cup preseason tournament. They’re to play the Mount Royal Cougars Thursday, UBC Thunderbirds Friday and Calgary Dinos Saturday.
