Gryphons connect to triple UOIT Ridgebacks

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons scored four consecutive goals on their way to a 6-2 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks in OUA women’s hockey play Saturday at the Gryphon Centre.

The four-goal run started with three goals in a span of exactly four minutes in the first period.

The Gryphs led 3-1 at the end of the opening period and 4-2 after the second.

Karli Shell hit for a pair of goals for the Gryphs while Madison Melo, Stephanie Gava, Nicole MacKinnon and Kaitlin Lowy added one apiece. Claire Merrick had two assists and Cyan Roepcke, Emma Forcey, Kristen Jay, Ashlee Lawrence, Shell, Laura Crowdis and Lowy each had one.

Kassidy Nauboris and Chelsea Ball scored for UOIT and Nicole Zabel, Ball, Erin Ross and Megan Johnston each had an assist.

The Gryphs outshot the Ridgebacks 29-26 and went 1-for-3 on their power play while UOIT went 1-for-2.

Aurore Beaulieu stopped 24 shots for the win in the Guelph net while UOIT’s Briar Hughes had 23 saves.

The win was the fourth in a row and seventh in eight games for the Gryphs who lead the league at 13-2-1-2 while UOIT stands at 6-11-1-1.

Guelph is to host the Queen’s Gaels (11-7-0-0) Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
