Gryphons dispose of York in first round of playoffs
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons got exactly what they expected from the scrappy York Lions as they opened their OUA women’s basketball playoffs with an 83-74 victory Wednesday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
The game was exactly what both teams had to have figured it would be as it was the same type of game the two had experienced in their lone regular-season meeting three months earlier at the GGAC. The Gryphs won that one by 10 (82-72).

The Lions turned in a huge second quarter in the playoff match as they turned a 15-12 deficit at the end of the first quarter into a 46-37 lead at halftime. However, the hosts came back in the third quarter to take a 61-58 lead into the final quarter.
York closed the gap to two points a couple of times in the fourth, but the visitors never pulled even. A 13-5 run by the Gryphs put the game away as it put the hosts ahead by 10 with 21 seconds to play. It was their largest lead of the game.
Natalie Vigna led the Gryphs with 25 points while MacKeely Shantz had 18, Renee Armstrong netted 14 and Julia Colavecchia had 10. Shantz also had six assists and two blocks while Vigna and Colavecchia each had three steals.

Golding hauled down 16 rebounds and King had 12 while Guelph native Jada Codrington, playing in what was likely her final OUA game, had nine assists in a game-high 38 minutes of time on the court. King and Golding each had a block while King also had three steals.
The Gryphs shot 45 percent on field goals, 41 percent on three-pointers and 63 percent on free throws. They also had 38 points in the paint, 31 on turnovers, 11 on second chances and seven from their bench.
