Gryphons extend win streak, sweep two doubleheaders
WINDSOR – The Guelph Gryphons swept a pair of doubleheaders in OUA baseball play on the weekend.
The Gryphs defeated the Western Mustangs 4-2 and 9-5 in a twinbill at Hastings Stadium Saturday.
Sunday in Windsor, the Gryphs swept the host Lancers 16-5 and 13-3.
The weekend sweep gives the Gryphs five consecutive victories and leaves them at 9-1 on the season.
The OUA’s regular season is strictly unofficial as the teams are playing unbalanced schedules and they’re not facing the same opponents. For example, some of the games for the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens are against the McGill Redbirds and Concordia Stingers of Montreal.
The participants in each of the four qualifying tournaments Oct. 7 and 8 are also known.
The Gryphs will host the Brock Badgers and McMaster Marauders in the Section A tournament at Hastings Stadium. Brock is 5-3 against OUA opponents while the Marauders are 1-4.
Windsor will host Section B (should be Section W) with the Waterloo Warriors, Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks and Western. Waterloo’s 7-3, Laurier’s 4-4, Windsor’s 3-5 and Western’s 2-6.
Ottawa will host Section C with the Queen’s Gaels and Carleton. Queen’s is 6-2, Carleton’s 3-3 and Ottawa’s 0-2 in games against OUA squads.
Toronto Metropolitan (nee Ryerson) will host Section D with the Toronto Varsity Blues, Laurentian Voyageurs and York Lions. Toronto’s 8-0, TMU’s 2-5, Laurentian’s 1-5 and York’s 0-8.
The Gryphs have another pair of doubleheaders this weekend as they’re to play a pair of road games against Ottawa Saturday and host Waterloo in a pair of games Sunday at Hastings Stadium. It sounds worse than it is as Saturday’s games are to be played in the Toronto area as the Gee-Gees are to play the Varsity Blues in Toronto Sunday.
