Gryphons face Saint Mary’s to open national tournament

OTTAWA – The OUA champion Guelph Gryphons are to begin their quest for the U SPORTS men’s soccer championship title Thursday morning.

The Gryphs are to battle the Atlantic silver medalist Saint Mary’s Huskies in the opening game of the tournament, the first quarterfinal. Game time at the Raven’s Perch on the Carleton University campus is 11 a.m.

The Gryphs will be facing a well-rested team as the Huskies have been idle since dropping the Atlantic final 4-0 to the Cape Breton Capers Nov. 7.

Guelph finished its regular season atop the OUA West at 8-0-2 before disposing of the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 2-1 in penalty kicks in the league quarterfinals, Carleton Ravens 1-0 in the semifinals and the York Lions 3-2 in last Saturday’s championship match.

Saint Mary’s was fourth at the completion of the Atlantic conference’s regular season with a 6-3-3 record. They defeated the UPEI Panthers 2-0 in the league quarterfinals and first-place Saint Francis Xavier X-Men 1-0 in the semifinals.

The other conference finals saw the UBC Thunderbirds edge the Victoria Vikes 1-0 in the Canada West final Nov. 7 and the Montreal Carabins drop thee Laval Rouge et Or 3-0 in the Quebec final last Friday.

The other national quarterfinals Thursday pit Victoria (6-3-3 at end of regular season) against Montreal (9-3-0) at 1:30 p.m., Laval (8-1-3) against Cape Breton Capers (8-1-3) at 4:30 p.m. and host Carleton (7-1-2) against UBC (4-2-6) at 7:30 p.m.

The teams that lose on Thursday will be back to play Friday in the consolation semifinals.

The consolation final is set for Saturday at 11 a.m. before the championship semifinals at 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Sunday’s games are the medal matches with the bronze-medal game going at 11 a.m. and the championship gold-medal game following at 2 p.m.
