Gryphons fade away in fourth quarter in season opener

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons hung with the Western Mustangs for three quarters of their OUA men’s basketball season opener Wednesday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre before falling behind in the final quarter.

A 17-5 run by the Mustangs early in the final quarter spurred them to an 87-77 victory.

“Western’s a very good team and you can’t turn the ball over 25 times like we did, you can’t shoot in the 50s from the line like we did and can’t let a guy go off in the second half,” Gryphon coach Chris O’Rourke said. “Also, we gave up 20 O boards. We only gave up nine in the second half, but we gave up 11 in the first half. Obviously, they got to the line a lot. That was part of it and we just had a run where we got up seven, but then we let them get on a run and carried from the third into the fourth.”

Western had led 19-16 at the end of the first quarter after scoring the first nine points of the game. The Gryphs rallied to shoot ahead 37-34 by halftime and were up 59-55 at the end of the third quarter. The Gryphs, though, had led by nine (59-50) with 50 seconds to go in the third quarter.

“We’re capable,” O’Rourke said. “We’re a solid team right now. We have to make teams beat us and our issue right now is that when we’re inconsistent, we’re beating ourselves.”

Western’s Omar Shiddo came to life in the final quarter as he hit three three-pointers and eight free throws for 17 of his game-high 27 points.

Tommy Yanchus led the Gryphs with 22 points while Malcolm Glanville had 17 and Banky Alade netted 11. Craig Valeriote and Rasheed Weekes each had eight, Aaron Nugent and Lansana Nwosu each had four and Jake Chaput had three.

Weekes Hauled down 12 rebounds while Glanville had five and Nugent had five assists, two blocks and a steal.

Jedson Tavernier had 16 points for Western while Marko Kovac and Alex Coote each had 13 and Julian Walker had 10. Walker also grabbed nine rebounds while Eriq Jenkins had eight, Nikola Farkic had nine assists, Aaron Tenant had two blocks and Jenkins had three steals.

The Gryphs shot 43 per cent on field goals, 44 per cent on three-pointers – Yanchus hit five of seven – and 58 per cent on free throws as they missed eight in the game.

Western shot 37 per cent on field goals, 43 per cent on three-pointers and 78 per cent on free throws.

Next home game for the Gryphs is Nov. 16 when they’re to face the Nipissing Lakers. Before then they’re to play five consecutive road games with matches against the Brock Badgers Saturday, Ryerson Rams Wednesday, Toronto Varsity Blues Nov. 3, Queen’s Gaels Nov. 9 and York Lions Nov. 10.
