Gryphons fade in preseason loss to Mount Royal

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons recovered from a slow start, but couldn’t come back from another fade later in the game as they dropped a Canadian university men’s preseason tilt 98-80 to the Mount Royal Cougars of Calgary Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

Mount Royal scored the first 12 points of the game before the Gryphs battled back to tie it 23-23 early in the second quarter. However the Cougars responded to the comeback with a 17-point run to regain control.

Mount Royal led 23-20 at the end of the first quarter, 51-33 at halftime and 75-51 at the end of the third quarter.

Tommy Yanchus led the Gryphs with 16 points while Lansana Nwosu had 15, Craig Valeriote 14 and Trevor Hutton 10. Nwosu also hauled down 13 rebounds and Valeriote had three steals.

Patrick Vandervelden had 22 points for Mount Royals while Matthew Guinto netted 18, John Hegwood had 15, Glen Yang had 13 and Nick Tancon had 12. Hegwood grabbed 15 rebounds and Vandervelden had four blocks. Guinto had three steals.

The game was the first of a 3-in-3 preseason weekend for the Gryphs. They’re to play the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Secondary School in Woodstock and they’re to host the Cape Breton Capers Sunday at 12 p.m. at the GGAC.

Guelph has won four of its seven preseason matches while the win was Mount Royal’s first in three preseason outings.

The Gryphs are to open their OUA league campaign Wednesday against the Western Mustangs at the GGAC. Game time is 8 p.m.
