Gryphons get a team-friendly football schedule
GUELPH – Here’s something a little different for the Guelph Gryphons in OUA football for the 2023 season.
They have a schedule that’s very team friendly in terms of last year’s regular-season records of the teams that they’re to play this year.
Last year they had the toughest schedule when looking at the previous season’s record of their opponents.
This year only the Waterloo Warriors have a schedule against teams with combined records worse than the Gryphon opponents.
The OUA released its 2023 football schedule this week and the Gryphs are to begin with a home game at Alumni Stadium against the Toronto Varsity Blues Aug. 26.
Each season each team faces eight OUA opponents meaning there are two they don’t play in that year’s regular season. For the Gryphs the two teams not on their regular-season schedule this year are the defending champion Western Mustangs (8-0 last season) and the third-place Ottawa Gee-Gees (6-2). Waterloo isn’t to face Western and the second-place Queen’s Gaels (7-1).
The Gryphon schedule also sees them alternate between home and away games throughout the season so they don’t have two consecutive home games or two consecutive road games. And their bye week is on the Thanksgiving weekend.
The Gryphs are to host the Laurier Golden Hawks Sept. 9, York Lions in the Homecoming Game Sept. 23 and Queen’s in the unofficial Lang Bowl – former Gryphon head coach and Queen’s alumnus Stu Lang and his wife Kim have donated greatly for massive improvements in both school’s home stadiums — Oct. 14.
Road games for the Gryphs have them slated to play at Windsor Sept. 3, McMaster Sept. 16, Waterloo Sept. 30 and Carleton Oct. 21.
All games except the one in Windsor are to start at 1 p.m. Game time for the match in Windsor on the Sunday of the Labour Day weekend is to be 7 p.m.
As for the playoffs, OUA quarter-finals are to go Oct. 28 followed by the semifinals Nov. 4 and the Yates Cup championship game Nov. 11.
The OUA champion is to play the Quebec champion in the Uteck Bowl national semifinal in Quebec Nov. 18.
The national championship Vanier Cup game is to be played Nov. 25 at site to be determined. London was named host of last year’s game last June.
