Gryphons get a victory on their opening weekend

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons picked up a win as they opened their Ontario University Softball (formerly Ontario Intercollegiate Women’s Fastpitch Association) season by hosting a pair of doubleheaders at the main diamond on the University of Guelph campus on the weekend.

Sunday, the Gryphs defeated the York Lions 8-5 in the opener, but fell 18-11 to the Lions in the nightcap.

The Queen’s Gaels, who had played a doubleheader to open their season a week earlier, swept both of Friday night’s games, winning 14-0 and 8-6.

Western Mustangs lead the West Division at 4-0 and are followed by the Brock Badgers at 3-1, McMaster Marauders at 2-1, Laurier Golden Hawks and Windsor Lancers at 2-2, the Gryphs at 1-3 and Waterloo Warriors at 0-4.

Queen’s tops the East Division standings at 7-1, the only team in the division with a winning record. Toronto Varsity Blues and York are both at 3-3, Ottawa Gee-Gees are at 2-2, Carleton Ravens are at 0-3 and Toronto Metropolitan Bold (nee Ryerson Rams) are at 0-4.

The Gryphs have a pair of road doubleheaders this coming weekend as they’re to play Brock at St. Catharines Friday starting at 7 p.m. and Waterloo Saturday starting at 2 p.m.
