
Gryphons’ Giles silver medalist in Gryphon Invitational golf
GUELPH – Jacqui Giles of the Guelph Gryphons shot a round of 78 to finish as the runner-up in the women’s individual competition in the Gryphon Invitational OUA golf tournament Monday at the Guelph Lakes Golf and Country Club.
Lexie Mckay of Western was the individual women’s champ with a score of 70 while Claire Stoney of Carleton was third at 79.
The Gryphons finished fifth in the women’s team category and sixth in the men’s team category in the tournament.
The Gryphon women had a team score of 261. Western Mustangs won at 246 and were followed by the Windsor Lancers at 251, Brock Badgers at 258 and Laurier Golden Hawks at 259.
The Gryphon men had a team score of 299 to finish behind the Waterloo Warriors (289), Laurier Golden Hawks (292), Windsor Lancers (295), Brock Badgers (296) and Western Mustangs (298).
Behind the top three in the women’s individual competition were Melanie Burgess of Brock and Marie Carunungan of Windsor at 81, Emily White of Brock, Madison Telford of Western, Hannah Prieur of Windsor and Kennedy Fremlin of Windsor at 85 and the Laurier pair of Vanessa Lin and Kristi Godkin at 86.
Other Gryphons in the tournament were Faith Hertner (91), Keira Cotter (92), Ella Oster (101), Taryn Hurd (105), Kate Calzonetti (106), Camryn Kilpatrick (107) and Julia Lipskie (117).
Matt McCrae of Toronto Metropolitan won the men’s individual event with a round of 69. Jacob Lacko of Laurentian, Jack Deighan of Waterloo and Luca Ferrera of Western each had rounds of 70.
Finishing at 71 were Ty Rouse of Carleton, Alex Fowke of Laurentian and Conor Gaudet of Laurier while the group at 72 were Matt Morris of Brock, Matthew Martel of McMaster, Graem Costigan of Waterloo, Nicholas Tanovich of Windsor and Evan Moon of Laurentian.
The Gryphon trio of Kobe Smith, Nathan Freuer and Curtis Coulson each shot 73 while Wes Gill shot 74, Joe Roy shot 75, Liam Fischer shot 77, Cam Foster shot 78 and Caleb Shorthouse shot 86.
The Gryphs are to compete in the Windsor Invitational Friday and Saturday and the OUA championship meet at Ottawa’s Hylands Golf Club Oct. 14 to 16.
